Laertes's Revenge In Act IV, King Claudius realizes that Polonius has been killed by Hamlet. In an act of revenge, King Claudius would like to put Hamlet to death but is unable to because the people of Norway love Hamlet. The King instead decides to send Hamlet to England so that the people of Norway will not know of his death. When Laertes returns from Paris, he becomes angry when he hears of his father's death. Laertes challenges Hamlet to a fight so that he can avenge his father's death . The theme of revenge is shown when King Claudius wants to kill Hamlet for Polonius's death . Claudius does not want the people of Norway to believe that he is an unfair ruler because he murdered Hamlet, a beloved individual that the people adore. Instead Claudius punishes Hamlet by sending him to England. When Hamlet is on his way to England, he is stopped by young Fortinbras when he is traveling to Poland. Hamlet unfavorably compares himself to Fortinbras. Fortinbras prepares to conquer land of no value while Hamlet prepares to avenge a murder. Hamlet tells himself that for now one that all of his "thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth!" (205)This quotation shows that Hamlet wants to kill the king or lose his own life. |

When Laertes returns from his trip to Paris, he decides that he must fight Hamlet because he has killed his father Polonius. The two men share the same kind of revenge because each has lost his father. The only way that Laertes can avenge is father is by killing Hamlet, but Hamlet has still not been able to end King CLaudius's live. |
